ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – Windward Islands Airways International (Winair), has been named the official airline for the Statia Sustainable Conference and Exhibition. The conference will be held at the Mike Van Putten Youth Center from September 25th – 27th 2012, during which delegates will discuss critical issues relating to the island’s sustainability.
As the official event carrier, Winair will facilitate transportation of delegates, including the media, to the conference. It is expected that the relationship will sustain beyond this inaugural conference.
“We at Winair are pleased to support this initiative by the St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation. We think it’s a very positive initiative that will benefit the destination,” said Claudio Buncamper, the vice president and director of marketing and sales at Winair. “We are also delighted to be the official airline of the Statia Sustainable Conference.”
“Winair has been the dependable airline for St. Eustatius for half a century and we are thankful for their support of this conference,” added Charles Lindo, the director of tourism.
- About the Conference
Every year during the month of September the STDF celebrates Tourism Week which revolves around the UNWTO’s World Tourism Day. This year the STDF is taking a different approach, and is organizing the Sustainable Conference. This will be the first of its kind for the Island of St. Eustatius and the goal is to raise the level awareness of sustainability by twenty per cent, as well as emphasize that sustainability is more than just changing light bulbs or planting a tree.
The STDF has confirmed a number of industry experts and it is expected that participants will take advantage of the opportunities this conference will provide and to network and share ideas with these industry experts.
The conference will address a number of critical issues such as how the local community can benefit from engaging in sustainable practices, including renewable energy sources – hydroelectricity, solar energy, wind energy, agro tourism, and how to maximize the benefits from local products.
The conference is designed to challenge tourism planners, policymakers, stakeholders and the general public to develop and implement strategies and practices that can sustain Statia’s limited resources.
“We want to ensure that our recourses are tapped into responsibly and in a manner that will not only benefit our economy and country, but that is also sustainable,” said Mr. Lindo.
